What is a heat pump?
Simply put, a heat pump is part of a heating and cooling system and is installed outside your home. Like an air conditioner, it can cool your home, but it’s also capable of providing heat. In cooler months, a heat pump pulls heat from the cold outdoor air and transfers it indoors, and in warmer months, it pulls heat out of indoor air to cool your home. They are powered by electricity and transfer heat using refrigerant to provide comfort all year round. Because they handle both cooling and heating, homeowners may not need to install separate systems to heat their homes. In colder climates, an electric heat strip can be added to the indoor fan coil for additional capabilities. Heat pumps do not burn fossil fuel like furnaces do, making them more environmentally friendly.

Does a heat pump need maintenance?
Yes. You should schedule heat pump maintenance with an HVAC professional at least once a year. If your heat pump is your primary heating and cooling system rather than a supplemental system, you might want to schedule maintenance two times per year–once in the fall and again in the spring.
Does a heat pump save me money?
YES! Heat pumps can be up to 300% more efficient than electric baseboards and up to 50% more energy efficient for cooling compared to a typical window AC unit, according to BC Hydro.
Heat pumps are a great option in B.C. if you’re hoping to reduce your GHG or carbon footprint. BC Hydro generates clean electricity, so it can be a way to reduce your reliance on fossil fuels. Time is money. Make the switch today.
